An article on itinews.co.za takes a close look at the whole spectrum of risks facing any investor considering mining operations in Africa. Commodity prices; currency fluctuations; political considerations (including the possibility of nationalisation). Thereís a lot to think about. But in addition to that list, thereís also the issue of insurance, including professional indemnity insurance.
Currently, the demand for suitably qualified, experienced consulting engineers exceeds the supply. So itís not entirely surprising that design mistakes resulting from the pressure that engineers are working under are starting to represent an increasing risk in the mining industry across the continent.
And to make matters worse, professional indemnity insurance in Africa is costly and only available from a limited number of specialist insurers.
